Data Lake VS Lake Formation
A Data Lake is the concept/architecture while Lake Formation is AWS's service to manage and secure it.
Data Lake:
Raw data storage (typically in S3)
Can store structured and unstructured data
Supports various file formats
Enables big data analytics
Requires security, governance, and cataloging
AWS Lake Formation:
Management layer for your data lake
Provides security and access control
Handles data ingestion
Manages data permissions
Integrates with AWS Glue Data Catalog
Enforces fine-grained access controls
Think of it this way:
Data Lake is like a large library of books (your data)
Lake Formation is the library management system that:
Controls who can read which books
Organizes the catalog
Manages how new books are added
Tracks who borrowed what
Ensures proper organization
Lake Formation essentially makes your data lake enterprise-ready by adding the necessary management, security, and governance layers on top of your raw data storage.
